How Hive thermostats saved customers £500 Million – and helped the planet 🌍
This Earth Day, we’re celebrating a milestone that proves just how powerful small everyday changes can be—especially when supported by smart tech.
Over the last 12 years, Hive thermostat users have collectively saved a whopping half a billion pounds on their energy bills. And that’s not all. These energy savings have also helped prevent 1.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere.
That’s the equivalent of:
Powering 539,000 homes for a year
Taking 1 million return flights off the London-New York route
Charging 560 billion smartphones
Driving over 6 billion petrol car miles - or 240,954 trips around the globe 🌍
A smart start that sparked a movement
When Hive launched its smart thermostat in 2013, it was an industry first—giving customers the ability to control their heating anytime, anywhere, from their phone.
Now, more than two million users across the UK are now saving money and making a difference, simply by managing their home’s energy usage more efficiently.
Saving energy (and cash) the smart way
Our smart thermostat customers can save up to £192 per year on their energy bills by using the app to make easy adjustments to their heating. That means the average household could see a return on their investment in as little as a year—while continuing to cut costs (and carbon) in the long term.
These savings are based on an average UK gas consumption of 11,500 kWh per year, using Ofgem’s April 2025 average unit rate of 6.987p per kWh (including VAT). On top of the cost benefits, households are saving around 508 kg of CO₂ emissions per year, just by switching to smarter heating habits.
In total, Hive thermostat users have cut their gas usage by over 6,200 GWh since 2013.
